Getting Menses Monthly- Why It Is So Important For Traditional Indian Women- A Strange Reason
A 34 year old woman, resident of Seawoods, Navi Mumbai came for consultation of irregular heavy menses.
She is a housewife and mother of two sons aged 8 and 3 years, both of them born by normal delivery.
She lives in a joint family where there are in total 11 members.
A heavy flow of house guests is a routine.
For treatment of DUB- Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding, a medial therapy of Ormiloxefene was suggested to her.
It was explained that this will control her bleeding and also may make her menses-free for next couple of months to give her time to recover from blood loss.
We were very surprised when she vehemently denied this treatment, saying that menses must come every month , no matter what.
When we listened sympathetically to her logic, we discovered that menstruation is the only time ,women in the family are allowed rest and it is very important for their own rejuvenation.
In those 4-5 days they stay inside their rooms , on bed, for the whole day.
Rest of the days they are working home chores from 5.30 in the morning to 11 in the night, without any break.
So much for woman liberation, woman rights and living life on own terms.
So much still needs to be done.
This is the condition in well educated urban family.
What about those poor illiterate families whether urban or rural….
Food for thought……
